Day Off!

I am enjoying a day off from work today. Many thanks to Christopher Columbus, may he rest in peace.

  • Columbus day is sort of a mixed blessing, isn't it? As far as the consequences of Columbus's discovery. I suppose some other continent was bound to discover the Americas someday, and you an arguement can certainly be made that certain benefits have arisen by the interaction between the two worlds. And certainly the people reading this wouldn't be around if an event that significant in history hadn't happened.

On the other hand though, I wonder what life would have been like if the discovery of the Americas by Europeans hadn't lead to the whole sale dismantling of an entire curlture.

  • Yes, a highly-effective, double-edged sword; Columbus's arrival in N.America I mean.  We celebrate the great and lasting effects of an ambitious explorer's legacy; at the same time, we think of the unspeakable atrocities that took place as a part of this man's mission.  Should we remember only the good and forget the bad?  Do we use this kind of history as political leverage in the name of current, social awareness and civil rights?  I don't know…

  • Patti, glad you enjoyed your day off :)  I just watched Back to the Future parts I and II this past weekend, so all I need now is a flux capacitor and then I can test my theory about the effects on the space-time continuum of starting a naval ninja battle against Columbus and his initial three-ship fleet.  My version of BTTF Part IV is going to feature pirates.

  • Will Keith Richards be involved?

  • *gasp* could it be so?! keith richards, i'd be down with that!

  • I guess we can stop by the 1960's and pick up the Rolling Stones to be the performing band for the ninja battleship fleet.  How do you suppose we set up an intriguing (if not just anachronistic) story with Columbus, a ninja navy, Keith Richards, and pirates, dudes?

  • Souds maybe like BTTF meets Bill and Ted's excellent adventure? PT, could you be in the movie walking around wearing cool sunglasses and a trench coat, then it could also combine elements of the matrix.

There should definitely be a slow-mo pan scene where the ninjas are boarding the pirate ship and the song, "It's all over Now" is playing in the background.

  • I would add a teletubbie as a sidekick. It would have a filthy mouth in my version.
