No Longer A Lawrencian

Today at about 4:15 I surrendered the keys to my Lawrence apartment. So very sad. Of course I'm now just right down the road. Myrinda and I met for coffee here in Kansas City this evening. She is keen to point out the wonderful new things that surround me. She's right. Even the coffee shop we went to was full of character. There are art museums and tango venues. There is a place for me here, I just need to find it. It was never that I didn't like KC, I just really love Lawrence.

Mom came to help me do the apartment cleaning today. It was quite a chore, but we whipped it. Thanks Mom! I got my scooter here and am waiting for a good, somewhat cooler time to take it on a joyride. I hope to find a scooter friendly route to the Med Center, where I will be working for the next two months. Tomorrow I start my rotation with Dr. Eng in geriatrics. It is both exciting and cruel to have to start a new job every month. I am going to extract as much as I can out of this year.

  • Yes, YOUR med center. Tomorrow I'll be at the Center on Aging from 8-5 with Marty Eng. And I still have something for you. ;)

  • Sounds as if things are going swell out that direction. I'm still coming back to Lawrence, despite the sad news. I'm changing my itenerary back a week though. I'll now be in Lawrence from the 4th through the 8th.

I would certainly love to get people together if you are free any of those evenings.

  • I'd love to get the perspective from someone who used to live in Lawrence about how KC really is.

I say this, because I lived in Lawrence and worked in Kansas City for a year and a half. I hated it, but maybe you'll find some redeming qualities that I could find. I suppose it didn't help that I worked in a bad part of town, either.

KC has a few things I really liked, one of which is a favorite coffee shop. The shop is directly south of the Starbucks near Westport. I think it's on J.C. Nichols Boulevard. Very cool. Very, well, Lawrence-ish.

  • Didn't make it out babycakes... but definitely still want to catch up and check out your new digs soon soon soon :) We'll talk.

  • Yo Grube, is your glass perhaps "half empty"? spanks for the encouraging words dude. I think I wanna kick yer ass. ....:) how big are you dude?

  • Wow. This has gotten really weird. Can't we all get along? Is that really Dad? Say it aint so.

  • Patti, yup, it's me. I'm not being agressive, just playing. I bet Grube is a 6' 5" linebacker type too. (NOT) Peace out big man. :) Smooch Patti!

  • I'm not really into sports.

Patti, is your dad from KC? I'm not saying KC's completely bad. Just 95 percent of it.

Be sure to check out Da Bronx on 39th St. down from KU Med. Best pizza in the area. And by area, I mean the midwest.

    By Blogger Grubesteak, At 20:02

  • I agree about D'Bronx. It's right by the Med Center and I've been there for lunch before. Also, Myrinda and I found a Java Break-like coffee shop nearby. Maybe it's the same place you like? I don't remember the name.

I decided that I hate commuting. Any place I have to commute to is a place I hate. Now that I live in KC, I like it much much more. My apartment isn't far from Johnson Drive, and there are a lot of cool places there.

  • The coffee shop you are speaking of patricia dearest, is The Crave.

Lawrence is all around fantastic.. but KC you gotta hunt out the good finds.. and suprisingly, there are alot of them. once you know your place, it will be alright. As for Grube.. and everyone else for that matter.. If you're as chill as we are, it doesn't matter what place we're in... be flexible.. Your surroundings shouldn't dictate your attitude.. you do.

    Peace.

  • Oh, and to describe my intonation of my last statement (above)..

    I was SASSY.

    LOVE it.

  • I dunno Becca Boo, the place I worked in KC was surrounded by long-term bums and death. Shortly before I left there was a guy killed at a gas station one block away - during the daylight.

    Granted, that was KCMO.

Downtown KC near Crown Center is nice. And I've been to quite a few places that aren't that bad (it's too bad the Dragonfly went under, that food was amazing).

But ultimately, Patti is right on the money. You'll hate any city if you have to commute to it.

As for that coffee shop, I'll get the name for you.

  • Becky- Sasstastic!! Yes, it is the Crave. I was already liking it when I noticed the barrista had pit hair. That's when I felt at home. Ah hippies.
Steak- I'm interested to hear if it's the same place.
