Life's Big Questions Answered: Part I

I learned something interesting in class yesterday. Imagine that! It was the answer to a question originally posed by Mimi and probably by others as well.

Why do we brush our teeth before going to bed if we're just going to do it again first thing in the morning?

Because mouth bacteria thrive during the sleeping hours. While we sleep, there is a much higher chance of inhaling said bacteria which then have the potential for causing infection in the airways. We brush to reduce the number of bacteria in the mouth and prevent this from happening. These bacteria are also responsible for morning breath. Yummy!

  • omg! i can't sleep if i haven't FLOSSED then BRUSHED either! i think that is why they (studies) have shown that people who floss and brush daily live longer than those who don't. those who don't floss and brush have probably aspirated a significant amount of bacteria into their lungs and probably die from pneumonia. that sucks. i recommend taking 1 minute out of your day to floss (in addition to just brushing) if it will add on a few years. i think it's well worth it.

    peace out

  • Erin, the 6P I'm working with today, just told me that she saw a patient last month who had an absess in his lung 3.4cm big, mostly likely from poor dental hygiene. They had him in isolation b/c they originally thought he had TB. This really happens! Brush your teeth!
