The Compact Disc
Is it too early to be nostalgic for CDs? I feel a twinge of shame as I pull out my portable CD player in a crowed airport; shunned by those with IPods. To me, there is something more substantial about playing a CD; like it is more real. I get the same feeling when I put on a vinyl record. Sure it’s bulkier, but I love that those tracks are fixed on that disc. Fixed in time. They will not be deleted. SillyP Style lives on.

It is never to early to be nostalgic for something. I'm nostalgic for my first flying car.
Ah the times we will have time. I think about that time in the future when I will be sitting with my top down hovering over the grand canyon. I reflect fondly of the night time drive to come, floating across the tree tops of the redwood national forest; as the hood of my car eclipses the full moon it will bring back memories of watching ET as a little child.
On a more serious note though, I know the feeling. I buy mp3s for immediate gratification, I buy vinyl when a record is worth sitting down and listening to in full, enjoying each and every savory note.
There is no doubt that listening to an mp3 player as you ride the metro, walk across town or sit at your desk is very different from sitting on a couch and listening to a whole album on vinyl getting up only once, half-way through, to flip wax.

I'm sitting here with Ember and we're working on the computer. Well, I mean, you get my drift.
So, I decide we need some music and rather than using iTunes on the computer, I decide to pop in a copy of Pearl Jam's latest album I have on my desk (yes, I purchased it instead of "stealing" it).
Anyway, I decided to play the CD instead because I don't have my speakers hooked up to my laptop and the alarm clock radio cd player is a little bit more robust than my laptop speakers.
I put the CD in and it starts skipping. I take it out, clean it off and it works fine for a bit until it starts skipping again.
I threw it in the trash.

Apprecating the sound of vinyl records (on a good player), I can understand. CDs?? It's digital anyway. … All right, I'm starting to sound like an audiophile. I guess there can be experiential association with CDs. But seriously, CDs are so inconvenient compared to high-capacity, re-programmable, low-volume storage devices.
